Since overheating will shorten the lifetime and decrease the performance of electronic equipment, some excess heat must be removed. Closed loop systems remove excess heat and protects sensitive equipment from water and dust.
Electronic equipment constantly gets more sophisticated and sensitive. As an example, we can mention DC/AC inverters used in photovoltage power facilities or electronic equipment used in telecom base stations.
A closed loop system works by letting the outside air pass through the plate heat exchanger on one side of the plate and the air from the enclosed space on the other side. The inside air is cooled by the outside air through thin aluminum plates. The outside air, contaminated with humidity and dust and, the clean, dry inside air never mix – the inside air is a closed loop. This provides a desirable environment for the sensitive electronic components inside the enclosure.
The cooling capacity of a telecom cooling system is many times described in the terms of heat removal per difference in temperature between the enclosure inside temperature and the outside ambient temperature [W/K]. But the cooling performance is not the only interesting parameter when designing a cooling system, also noise levels, fan power consumption, and cost has to be taken into consideration in order to develop a competitive cooling system.
Air-to-Air Heat Exchangers
We have two types of plate heat exchangers, cross flow and counter flow. In a cross flow exchanger the cold and the warm air flow perpendicular to each other. In counter flow exchanger, the two airstreams flow in opposite direction to one another. The airflow in our counter flow heat exchangers can be adjusted in several different ways.
The cross flow heat exchangers can be assembled in a two-step configuration. The application determines which heat exchanger type provides the best solution.
Model H2 is our most efficient cross flow plate heat exchanger. It combines low-weight with high differential pressure resistance and is able to reach typical dry temperature efficiencies above 80%

Thousands of Heatex Model M heat exchangers, especially developed for closed loop cooling, have been installed all over the world in telecom cabinets used by carriers such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Telia and NEC.
Heatex supply heat exchangers for efficient and reliable closed loop cooling of photovoltaic central inverters. By removing heat efficiently (hence preventing overheating) and at the same time protect the sensitive electronic equipment from dust and moisture, the lifetime of the inverter as well as the inverter efficiency can be drastically increased.
