Closed Loop Cooling

Electronic equipment constantly gets more sophisticated and sensitive. As example, we can mention DC/AC inverters used in photovoltage power facilities or electronic equipment used in telecom base stations. Since overheating will shorten the lifetime and decrease the performance of electronic equipment, some excess heat must be removed. Closed loop systems are preferred to remove excess heat since they are, at the same time, protecting sensitive equipment from water and dust.

This is how it works: The outside air passes through the plate heat exchanger on one side of the plate and the air from the enclosed space recirculates on the other side. The inside air is cooled by the outside air through thin aluminum plates. The outside air, contaminated with humidity and dust and, the clean, dry inside air never mix – the inside air is a closed loop. This provides a desirable environment for the sensitive electronic components inside the enclosure.

The cooling capacity of a telecom cooling system is many times described in the terms of heat removal per difference in temperature between the enclosure inside temperature and the outside ambient temperature [W/K]. But the cooling performance is not the only interesting parameter when designing a cooling system, also noise levels, fan power consumption, and cost has to be taken into consideration in order to develop a competitive cooling system.

Air-to-Air Heat Exchangers
We have two types of plate heat exchangers, cross flow and counter-flow. In a cross-flow exchanger the cold and the warm air flow perpendicular to each other. In counter flow exchanger, the two airstreams flow in opposite direction to one another. The airflow in our counter flow heat exchangers can be adjusted in several different ways.

The cross flow heat exchangers can be assembled in a two-step configuration. The application determines which heat exchanger type provides the best solution.

  • Using natural heat flux in combination with high-performance design keep running costs low.
  • By keeping the two air flows separated, the electronic equipment is protected from water and dust.
  • By using air as cooling medium air-to-air heat exchangers are flexible, easy to design and implement.
