Closed Loop Cooling

When converting between different forms of energy, a part of the available energy is lost, often as heat. In a wind turbine, kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy and the losses are transferred into heat. To ensure the life expectancy of the components inside the nacelle both the heat generated by the process of energy conversion as well as solar radiation needs to dissipate. Generally, larger generators create more heat than smaller versions.

Heatex Air-to-Air Cooling Solutions
Heatex offers an alternative cooling system which combines the positive aspects of traditional cooling methods while minimizing the drawbacks found in tubular air-to-air and liquid-to-air solutions.

This is how it works: The outside air passes through the heat exchanger on one side of the plate and the air from the nacelle recirculates on the other side. The inside air is cooled by the outside air through thin aluminum plates. The outside air, contaminated with salinity, humidity and dust and the clean dry inside air never mix, creating a closed loop system and a desirable environment for the electronic components inside the nacelle.

The heat exchanging process depends on differences in temperature between the supply (inside) air and the exhaust (outside) air. Higher differences between these flows require less fan power to transfer the same amount of heat. To save energy even further, it’s possible to install a VFD, Variable Frequency Drive.

Heatex air-to-air cooling systems are suitable for both onshore and offshore applications and allow for a high degree of flexibility which makes it possible to retrofit Heatex air-to-air cooling solutions in existing wind turbine generators.

System Solutions
D1 - Direct Drive and Nacelle Cooling

The direct-drive and nacelle air-to-air cooling system allow for a more compact wind turbine solution since the gearbox is excluded.

The conversion of kinetic energy to electricity takes place in a permanent magnet generator which is one of the costliest components in a direct driven wind turbine. Even though the direct-drive generator has a lot of advantages, it still needs cooling.

G1 - Gear Box Driven Generator Cooling

The gearbox driven generator cooling solution for conventional gearbox generators and electrical motors is based on Heatex cross-flow heat exchangers. Its performance has been benchmarked against a conventional tubular heat exchanger and it proved to have excellent performance. Size and weight were reduced, but also the required fan power. Additionally, it was more efficient compared to a tubular air-to-air cooling system.

With Heatex air-to-air heat exchanger cooling solutions it’s possible to design a unit that completely balances the temperature between the drive end and non-drive end of the generator by two counter-flow heat exchanger circuits. In addition, the average temperature of the generator is decreased which allows for an extended lifetime or higher power output.
